The organic food industry is of vital importance to Quebec’s economy. In 2023, its contribution to the economy was estimated at over 6 per cent of gross domestic product and 12 per cent of total employment. Bio-food exports reached a record high of 12 billion dollars in 2023. These international activities generate significant benefits for Quebec and for the businesses involved. Preparation for exporting is crucial to avoiding pitfalls that could prove fatal for certain businesses, particularly SMEs. In a CIRANO study (St-Pierre et al., 2024), the authors examine the financial challenges that can prove critical at any stage of the export process and propose a planning tool.
