The Government of Québec Renewed Its Support for CIRANO and the “En avant math!” Initiative

CIRANO enthusiastically welcomes the announcement of renewed government support for its research and knowledge transfer activities for the next three years, as made public in the 2026-2027 budget presented by Finance Minister Eric Girard.

In section 3.2 of the budget plan, dedicated to support for university research, the government reaffirms the central role of research funding in addressing major societal challenges and stimulating innovation in Québec. The government also highlights that in recent years, it has contributed to funding research organizations like CIRANO, whose work benefits the entire Québec economy, notably in strategic areas such as taxation, productivity, and public policy.

The budget also allocates $1.5 million for 2026–2029 to the joint “En avant math!” initiative, conducted in partnership with the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) at the Université de Montréal. This strategic partnership aims to strengthen the role of mathematics in education, research, and innovation in Québec in a sustainable way.

This announcement is excellent news for the entire CIRANO community including researchers, fellows, project leaders, research professionals, students, and staff members. It represents a clear vote of confidence in the research conducted at CIRANO and in its mission of knowledge transfer and engagement.
