What really undermines family physicians' morale in Quebec

A study by Nadia Sourial (ESPUM, CIRANO) and colleagues is highlighted in an article in Profession Santé intitled "Ce qui mine vraiment le moral des médecins de famille québécois" (What really undermines family physicians' morale in Quebec) reaching a wide audience of health care professionals.

Also selected in "this week's new arrivals" by the Library of the National Assembly, the study will reach a much broader audience, including decision-makers.

Co-authored with Géraldine Layani (Université de Montréal), Erin Strump (McGill University), Maude Laberge (Université Laval) and Roxane Borgès Da Silva (ESPUM), the report État du mieux-être et de la satisfaction des médecins de famille au Québec shows that more than half of family physicians (62.5%) were at risk of distress.

The following factors are associated with the well-being of family doctors in Quebec: work–life balance followed by a sense of fulfillment in the role of family physician, exposure to unreasonable expectations or verbal abuse from patients, satisfaction with human resources, and lack of awareness of initiatives aimed at improving physicians well-being.

This study stems from a collaboration between the research team and the monitoring committee of the Table nationale de concertation sur la valorisation de la médecine de famille established in 2023 with the mandate to develop a plan to bring together all measures needed to enhance the value of family medicine practice and ensure their coordination.
