On June 9, 2022, David Ramos Muñoz, Associate Professor of Business Law at the University Carlos III of Madrid and CIRANO Visiting Researcher, gave a lecture on Sustainable Finance: From Banking and Securities Regulation to Corporate Governance.
How is corporate governance affected by sustainable finance? This seminar seeks to analyze how this is happening, in both theory and practice, using the European Union as an example. The commitment of regulators and market players to align finance'CDs goals with environmental and social challenges has turned "sustainable finance" into a promising field, but also a moving target. Especially in the European Union, it is hard to keep track of all policy initiatives; even harder to fit them together in a broader picture. This presentation will provide a taxonomy of the measures proposed and adopted in the EU in the fields of securities and bank regulation, and will explain how, by making certain risks more salient, and by affecting how firms finance themselves, the rules are shaping corporate governance. Yet, this still leaves many questions, and sources of conflict, open.
