Organized in collaboration with the Quebec inter-university centre for social statistics (QICSS) and the Canadian Research Data Centre Network, this seminar was an opportunity for authors Marie Connolly, Xavier St-Denis and Yacine Boujija to present in English and to a larger audience the analyses and results of a recent CIRANO study on social mobility.
This study is the first to examine the influence of geographic mobility on intergenerational income transmission in Quebec. It is based on Statistics Canada’s Intergenerational Income Mobility Database, whose longitudinal structure allows to track 1.4 million young people to late stages of adult life. The data come from tax data files and provide access to information on the incomes of parents and children from 1978 to 2016. The authors show that the phenomenon of social immobility affects more young people who grew up outside major cities, particularly those who still live there in their early thirties.
This seminar is part of an effort to highlight the work being done at CIRANO across Canada. By partnering with the Canadian Research Data Centre Network, CIRANO aims to ensure greater visibility for the work and expertise of its researchers.
