On June 3, CIRANO held a symposium summarizing the second phase of the En avant math! initiative. The event brought together researchers, mathematicians, mathematics educators, teachers, and other stakeholders in the field to present the main findings of the work carried out under this second grant, as well as the numerous initiatives implemented in the field over the past few years.
In a context where numeracy, developed from early childhood, plays a decisive role in educational and professional paths and influences life trajectories, this event provided an opportunity to assess the current state of affairs based on research data and accumulated experience. The discussions also contributed to the development of recommendations for public policymakers to support the development of mathematical skills in Quebec.
Throughout the day, participants attended presentations on a wide range of topics, including the contribution of mathematics to Quebec’s economy, the impact of field activities, gaps in mathematical skills and employer perceptions, school-based preparation for the development of mathematical skills, technology education in schools, and training programs developed by the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM).
The research also addressed issues related to the role of mathematical skills in intergenerational economic mobility, the predictive power of PISA test scores regarding individual success, and the dynamic development of numeracy skills. Several grassroots initiatives were also highlighted, including those of Pour un Montréal scientifique, Accromath, Les points de convergence, La magie des maths, the Association québécoise des jeux mathématiques (AQJM), and the SMAC program.
The conference concluded with the announcement of renewed government support for the initiative. The Quebec budget includes a $1.5 million investment for the 2026–2029 period to continue En avant math!, a joint initiative led by CIRANO and the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) at the Université de Montréal.
