Biography

A CIRANO Researcher since 2020, Alphonse Singbo is Assistant Professor in the Department of Agri-Food Economics and Consumer Science at Université Laval.

Holding a Ph.D. in Agro-economics from Wageningen University, his research interests are microeconomics, production economics, economic modeling, applied econometrics, mathematical programming, industrial organization and operations research.

He was a Professor at the Institut de technologie agroalimentaire de Québec and was a Senior Researcher in Economics for three years, in West Africa, at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics. Until recently, he was a researcher at the Centre d'expertise en gestion agricole de l'Université Laval and in the Department of Economics and Consumer Sciences at that university.

In the past, he has worked more specifically on the management of agricultural and agri-food businesses and has a rich experience in analyzing the economic performance of agricultural businesses in Quebec and in developing countries.

He is the author of a number of scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals. Several of his articles deal with the productivity and efficiency of Quebec farms. His article entitled "Scale Economies, Technical Efficiency and the Sources of Total Factor Productivity Growth of Quebec Dairy Farms", published in 2016 in the Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics, received honourable mention for the best article published in the journal that same year. In addition, his co-authored article entitled "Production Rigidity, Input Lumpiness, Efficiency, and the Technologie Hurdle of Quebec Dairy Farms" received the 2017 Best Paper Award in the Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics. He has just published an article in the same journal on hog farm productivity and the impact of productivity gains on Farm Income Stabilization Insurance Program costs.

His current research focuses on agricultural futures markets, agricultural risk analysis and issues related to the competitiveness of agricultural and agri-food businesses (performance, transfers, financing methods, etc.).
