Transport Canada grants $2.6 million to CIRANO


Transport Canada announced funding for the project "Data Science and Knowledge Transfer Hub for Trade and Intermodal Transportation in the St. Lawrence/Great Lakes Corridor (SLGL)."

For this project, the Government of Canada will contribute up to $2.6 million over 5 years to CIRANO through the National Trade Corridors Fund (NTCF). Researcher and Fellow Thierry Warin (HEC Montréal and CIRANO) led the application.

Several researchers from HEC Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal, UQAM, Université de Montréal, Université du Québec à Rimouski, University of Ottawa will be involved, in collaboration with CIRRELT and IVADO. Various ministries, municipalities, and ecosystem stakeholders will be involved in different aspects of the project.

The launch will take place on March 21, at the CIRANO Pole on Data Science for Trade and Intermodal Transportation's annual Symposium, organized in collaboration with Transport Canada.

Presentation of the highlights of the "Baromètre de la confiance des consommateurs québécois à l'égard des aliments" to MAPAQ
tw On January 24, Nathalie de Marcellis-Warin and Ingrid Peignier presented the highlights of the "Baromètre de la confiance des consommateurs québécois à l'égard des aliments" (Barometer of Quebec consumers' confidence in food) at a training seminar for MAPAQ employees. The Barometer is a measurement tool developed at CIRANO.

tw The video of the January 18 webinar "Geographic Mobility and Intergenerational Transmission of Income in Quebec" is now available online. Organized in collaboration with the Quebec Inter-University Centre for Social Statistics (QICSS) and the Canadian Research Data Centre Network, this seminar was an opportunity for authors Marie Connolly and Xavier St-Denis to present the analyses and results of a recent CIRANO study on social mobility.

tw Brahim Boudarbat, Professor at the Université de Montréal and CIRANO Researcher and Fellow, is in the media following the publication of the CIRANO report "Les minorités visibles nées au Canada: l’angle mort des politiques d’intégration au marché du travail" last month. He is quoted in two articles: the first in Les Affaires and the second in Le Devoir.

Conditional release, social reintegration and criminal recidivism

In Quebec, offenders sentenced to more than six months are eligible for parole once they have served one-third of their sentence. About half of eligible offenders choose to waive their right to attend a parole hearing. Why? During this seminar, authors Guy Lacroix (Université Laval, CIRANO) and William Arbour (Université de Montréal) will present the analyses and results of a recent CIRANO study that identifies the key determinants of the choice to waive parole hearings and examines the causal effect of parole on recidivism.

Quebec infrastructure plan: interprovincial comparison and sustainability

During this seminar, authors Pierre-Carl Michaud (HEC Montréal, CIRANO), Marcelin Joanis (Polytechnique Montréal, CIRANO) and Louis Lévesque will discuss a CIRANO study in which they conclude that the investments planned in the Quebec Infrastructure Plan (PQI) for the coming decades are unlikely to be sufficient to address the rapidly growing asset maintenance deficit (AMD).

Integration of immigrants and visible minorities in Quebec and Canada

A recent CIRANO report by Brahim Boudarbat (Université de Montréal, CIRANO) and Idossou Marius Adom (International Monetary Fund) concludes that integration into the job market in Quebec and Canada is determined more by belonging to a visible minority than by being an immigrant. Even if they were born in Canada, members of visible minorities seem to struggle to carve out a place for themselves in the job market. During this symposium, Brahim Boudarbat will present the highlights of his study. A panel of people from various backgrounds will then discuss the issues involved in welcoming and integrating immigrants to Quebec.

For its annual 2023-2024 theme "Accelerating the transition to a sustainable and innovative biofood sector", CIRANO is mobilizing its network of biofood researchers to organize a one-day symposium bringing together all government partners involved in the Biofood Policy. This symposium is an integral part of MAPAQ's consultations on updating the policy, and will highlight the sector's issues and priorities beyond 2025.  Throughout the day, presentations by CIRANO experts will alternate with reflection workshops. This event of experience sharing and collective intelligence workshops will focus on four key themes for the future of the sector.
