2024 Bourstad Challenge: the registration period opens on January 16!
tw CIRANO and its main partner for this activity, the Financial Markets Authority (AMF), will launch registrations for the Bourstad 2024 competition on January 16, 2024, between noon and 1 p.m. It will be possible to participate in person or at distance. To participate, registration is mandatory.

Welcome to Elina Caron, CIRANO's new Communications Coordinator
tw CIRANO is pleased to announce that Elina Caron has joined the team as Communications Coordinator ! Holder of a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and Communications, she developed her Communications project management skills over several years in various types of structures. Elina joined the CIRANO team in December 2023 and is in charge of digital communications, social network management, graphic design and communications project management.

Nathalie de Marcellis-Warin awarded the 2023 « Prix de la Collaboration scientifique » from the Institut d'administration publique du Québec (IAPQ)
tw Nathalie de Marcellis-Warin, Professor at Polytechnique Montréal, researcher and CEO of CIRANO, presented the «Prix de la Collaboration scientifique» at the Excellence de l'admission publique du Québec 2023 awards ceremony as President of the Jury. This award honors "a team that has contributed to a project with a significant impact on public programs and policies, and on the Quebec population, through the production, collection and use of evidence-based data and scientific knowledge in all fields (health, nature and technology, society and culture). "

Pierre-Carl Michaud received the « Esdras Minville » Award
tw Pierre-Carl Michaud, Professor at HEC Montréal and CIRANO researcher, has been awarded the « Esdras Minville »  prize. This award recognizes professors who have made a remarkable contribution to HEC Montréal’s renown. This contribution is made through their activities and achievements in the academic, professional, and public spheres over the past 5 years.

Réjean Hébert appointed to the Order of Canada
tw Réjean Hébert (Université de Montréal) was appointed as Officer to the Order of Canada for championing the autonomy of senior citizens through his acclaimed research and policy work in the field of gerontology. Réjean Hébert has been advocating for home care reform for several years.

Several CIRANO researchers present at the American Economic Association's 2024 conference
tw Each January, a three-day conference to present papers on general economic topics is organized by the AEA, in collaboration with 64 related discipline associations known as the Allied Social Science Associations (ASSA). Many experts in economics are brought together to network and highlight new achievements in economic research. This year's conference took place from January 5 to 7, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas. Several CIRANO researchers were present to animate or participate in panels related to the Transport and Trade pole.

Bourstad: Launch of registrations for the Bourstad 2024 competition
Tuesday, January 16, 2024
CIRANO and its main partner for this activity, the Financial Markets Authority (AMF), will launch registrations for the Bourstad 2024 competition on January 16, 2024, between noon and 1 p.m., an event in which it will be possible to participate in person or at distance. Benoit Desgroseillers, vice-president of talent development at Finance Montréal and honorary president of the Bourstad competition, Nathalie de Marcellis-Warin, president and CEO of CIRANO, and Me Alexandre Bardoux, regional director of regulation at OCRI and president of the jury for the Bourstad 2024 competition will be present as well as representatives of the competition's sponsors. Each year, this competition welcomes participants who must manage a virtual portfolio of $200,000 and invest this amount in different investment vehicles. For more information go to bourstad.ca.

Brownbag Webinar : Geographic Mobility and the Intergenerational Transmission of Income in Québec
Thursday, January 18, 2024
Organized in collaboration with the Quebec inter-university centre for social statistics (QICSS) and the Canadian Research Data Centre Network, this seminar will be an opportunity for authors Marie Connolly, Xavier St-Denis and Yacine Boujija to present in English and to a larger audience the analyses and results of a recent CIRANO study on social mobility. This study is the first to examine the influence of geographic mobility on intergenerational income transmission in Quebec. This seminar is part of an effort to highlight the work being done at CIRANO across Canada. By partnering with the Canadian Research Data Centre Network, CIRANO aims to ensure greater visibility for the work and expertise of its researchers.

Healthcare financing webinar: learning from Morocco's experience with activity-based pricing

In the context of healthcare administration in France, Morocco and Quebec, there is a great deal of interest in the classification of diagnoses into homogeneous groups, known as diagnosis related group (DRG). This webinar, co-organized by CIRANO, the Unité de Santé Internationale (USI) of the Université de Montréal and the École de santé publique de l'Université de Montréal (ESPUM), will provide an opportunity to learn more about these management systems and how they are applied, particularly in the context of the implementation of fee-for-service in Quebec. Dr. Philippe Michel and Dr. Houcine Akhnif, specialists in this field, will present their work and reflections. The webinar will be moderated by Roxane Borgès Da Silva (Université de Montréal and CIRANO).

Performance of health care and services for seniors in Quebec
Thursday, February 1, 2024
Following the submission of her report on the performance of the care and services system for seniors in CHSLDs, the Commissioner for Health and Well-being entrusted two mandates to research teams in order to inform decision-making on the assessment of the functional autonomy of elderly people. The heads of the CIRANO Pole on the efficiency of health services and policies Roxane Borgès Da Silva and Carl-Ardy Dubois invite you to this workshop to discuss these two studies. The Commissioner of Health and Wellness will provide the background to this initiative and discuss the recommendations.

Conditional release, social reintegration and criminal recidivism

In Quebec, offenders sentenced to more than six months are eligible for parole once they have served one-third of their sentence. About half of eligible offenders choose to waive their right to attend a parole hearing. Why? During this seminar, authors Guy Lacroix (Université Laval, CIRANO) and William Arbour (Université de Montréal) will present the analyses and results of a recent CIRANO study that identifies the key determinants of the choice to waive parole hearings and examines the causal effect of parole on recidivism.
