Creation of the CIRANO Pole on Data Science for Trade and Intermodal Transportation

CIRANO is pleased to announce the creation of a new Research Pole. Multidisciplinary in nature, its main objective is to use the latest developments in data science to bridge the gap between trade, transportation, and their economic and environmental impacts and to help decision making in the face of major challenges faced by supply chains (optimization, resilience visibility, climate challenges...) and to support public policies.

The lead researcher is Professor Thierry Warin (HEC Montreal). The researchers who will be involved in the Pole's activities are Florian Mayneris and Julien Martin (UQAM) for international trade, Ari van Asche (HEC Montréal) for supply chains, Dalibor Stevanovic (UQAM) for modeling, Marcelin Joanis (Polytechnique Montréal) for infrastructure and public investment, Nathalie de Marcellis-Warin (Polytechnique Montréal) and Ingrid Peignier (CIRANO) for risk management and Martin Trépanier (Polytechnique Montréal, director of CIRRELT) for transportation. Alain Dudoit, Invited Fellow (expert in public policy) and Molivann Panot, Research Professional, will be involved in the Pole’s activities and the development of partnerships. This pole aims to federate projects, it will involve other researchers from several of CIRANO's major themes.

THE RESEARCH AT CIRANO
A study to assess the prevalence of COVID-19 in Quebec is in progress at CIRANO
tw Due to the increasing number of cases and the absence of an estimate of the number of COVID-19 cases in Quebec, a study is in progress at CIRANO to assess the prevalence of COVID-19 in the province. A dynamic analysis of international environmental agreements under partial cooperation
tw Researchers Luca Colombo, Associate Professor at Deakin Business School, Paola Labrecciosaz, Associate Professor at Monash Business School and Ngo Van Long, Professor at McGill University, CIRANO Fellow and researcher are studying the dynamics of equilibrium membership of an international environmental agreement aimed at increasing the stock of a global public good such as climate change mitigation. In contrast with previous studies, they assume partial cooperation among signatories, and show that the coalition size can be large and increasing over time even when the initial coalition size is small.

Austerity Reduces Public Health Investment
tw Researchers Olivier Jacques, assistant professor at the University of Montreal and CIRANO researcher, and Alain Noël, professor at the University of Montreal, have developed a theory of health spending priorities contrasting preventive care with curative care. Public health investments help to prevent mortality and reduce health care costs. Yet very few studies have examined the determinants of preventive care investments across countries and over time. Preventive care is unlikely to be prioritized by governments since it is a public good that requires the allocation of scarce resources in the present to generate diffuse benefits that unfold only in the long-term.
