The 8th annual Workshop on Networks in Trade and Finance took place on October 18 and October 19, 2019 at CIRANO. This workshop is organized jointly with CIRANO and the Sam M. Walton College of Business (University of Arkansas), and builds on the successful CIRANO Workshops on Networks in Trade and Finance that have taken place in Montreal, Fayetteville (Arkansas, USA) and Lucca (Italy) over the last seven years.

Theme: Networks are everywhere. Global trade, supply chains, financial markets, the World Wide Web, professional and social communities are examples of interconnected systems that are important to the structure and function of the modern world. Networks are a general yet powerful means of representing patterns of connections or interactions between parts of such systems. The network approach facilitates an understanding of mechanisms and reveals patterns in the data that are difficult to see using other approaches. With this as the leitmotiv, this workshop aims to bring together a group of researchers in the related areas of trade, finance, economic development, sociology, and business, with the following goals:

  • Demonstrate the value of the network approach for generating novel insights into these areas.
  • Foster a cross-disciplinary exchange of ideas and methods within the field of researchers in these areas.
  • Explore the potential for real-world applications of the network approach that will be of value to practitioners in various fields of business and government, such as finance, logistics, healthcare, transportation, communication, economic development, and social media.

Raja Kali

A CIRANO Associate Researcher and Fellow since 2011, Raja Kali is Professor in the Department of Economics at the Sam M. Walton College of Business of the University of Arkansas. He is also Holder of the ConocoPhillips Chair in International Economics and Business and Chair of the Department of Economics.

Holding a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Maryland at College Park, his research has examined the impact of globalization on international trade, financial crises and economic growth.

He has been a visiting research scholar at the Indian School of Business, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, University of Melbourne, and at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He was a visiting professor of international business at HEC Montréal in 2012.

Ekaterina Turkina

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2017, Ekaterina Turkina is Associate Professor in the Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at HEC Montréal. She holds the Professorship in International Business Networks as well as the Chair in Global Innovation Networks at HEC Montréal, and a member of the Groupe de Recherche en Affaires internationales (GRAI). She is also an Associate Editor of Journal of Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and a member of International Advisory Board of International Journal of Productivity Management and Assessment Technologies.

Holding a Ph.D. in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh, herresearch areas are socio-cultural and politico-economic contexts in international business, innovation and inter-firm networks, international entrepreneurship, and industrial clustering.

She has published in World Economy Journal, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Common Market Studies, Journal of Business Research, Journal of European Integration, Cross Cultural Management: an International Journal, Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, and the International Journal of Computer Science and Networks.

She has written three books and was a recipient of several awards, including the Highly Commended Paper Award from the Journal of Enterprising Communities, Best Paper on EU Governance from the European Community Studies Association, U.S. State Department Young Leaders Fellowship and other. She has recently been nominated for the Alan Rugman Most Promising Scholar Award that is given to talented scientists under the age of forty.

Ari Van Assche

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2005, Main Researcher of the theme World Economy, Ari Van Assche is Full Professor in the Department of International Business at HEC Montréal. He holds a Professorship in Educational Innovation on Economic Diplomacy at HEC Montréal. He is also a Research Fellow with the Institute for Research on Public Policy (IRPP), as well as Deputy Editor of the Journal of International Business Policy.

Holding a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Hawaï at Manoa, his research focuses on the organization of global value chains and their impact on international trade policies.

In 2018, Redesigning Canadian Trade Policies for New Global Realities, a book he co-authored with Stephen Tapp and Robert Wolfe, took the Doug Purvis Memorial Prize from the Canadian Economics Association and the Roger Charbonneau Award from HEC Montréal. He is also a three-time winner of the award for the most promising scholar under 40 from the Academy of International Business, in 2011, 2012 and 2015.
